Once you have completed all of the above, you are ready to start playing. Seto Kaiba will accompany you through a long and disproportionate tutorial that you will have to complete to start the official game. Teaming up with Seto, you’ll be introduced to four-player matches and learn the rules of this format. Before doing this, you agree to Konami’s privacy policies, select a username and an avatar.

Game mechanics and essentials

Yu-Gi-Oh Cross Duel is quite a difficult game to understand at first. It will take some time to get familiar with all its mechanics, controls and characters. In this section we will clarify the main points you need to know.

All game modes, whether for two or four players, have a board and a number of rounds (from 4 to 8). Players have life points that are stolen by the rest when enemy monsters attack an opponent’s deck. The objective of the game is to leave a player with zero or to be the one with the most points once the game is over.

Each player receives the cards from their deck at random and decides which one to play. You have a certain amount of time to place them before the turn ends. In each round we will have a few seconds to place the monsters on the board, in attack or defense and then the option to place trap cards or activate magic cards. Once the turn is over, the monsters will face each other. Chance, the type of cards and your strategy will determine your victory.

Types of cards and decks

First of all, like the Anime, Manga and other games based on Yu-Gi-Oh, the important thing is the card competitions using monsters. At the time of its release there are 123 cards in total, but new ones will be added. The first thing you have to do before you start playing is to create a Deck or deck for your competitions. These are made up of a maximum of 20 cards and a signature monster.

Signature Monsters are cards, generally known from anime, that feature above-average attack and defense attributes. They also have special abilities that will give you an advantage when summoning them on the board. This card is available from the first round of the game and to summon it you will need to make sacrifices of others already cast.

There are three types of cards based on their utility:

  • Monster cards .
  • Spell Cards: Summoned on the second turn of each round.
  • Trap Cards: They are placed hidden on the board and activated based on their powers.

Monster and Companion Upgrade

As a novelty and as if it were an RPG, the monster cards have attributes and abilities that can be improved with resources . For example, we can increase life, defense or attack. This makes the game more attractive, but it also means a longer usage time if we don’t want to spend money and want to win duels.

On the other hand, being a new player, you can count on companions from the original Anime like Seto Kaiba. These characters level up and allow you to earn rewards. As you advance in the game you will unlock new companions.

New combat mechanics: four against four

In other Yu-Gi-Oh games we have already competed in one-on-one battles. In this new edition, both Tac Duels (individual) and Assault Duels (cooperative four) are still available. The great novelty is the game mechanics of all against all. We explain it to you.

This new method consists of a competition in which four players face each other for eight rounds or until one of them is eliminated. Each player has a certain number of Life Points or life points. The goal is to steal those points using our different types of cards.

On this occasion, the board is connected with three different rails : one on the left, one in the center and one on the right. Each of them has a course and connects with one of the three remaining players. You decide which direction to go, but remember that the monsters the opponents summon will reach your stage in two turns if you don’t stop them first.

Strategy and the use of trap and magic cards come into play in this mechanic. When there are no monsters protecting the decks, they will attack the deck directly, stealing the life points corresponding to the attack strength that monster has left.

Remember that monster cards can be placed in defensive position and attack position. Defensive stances will not advance, they will protect your deck and weaken the opposing card if you have the ability to do so.
